How Do Ductless Air Conditioners Work?

Chances are that your home has central cooling, or at least central heating, but you’re considering getting a ductless AC. You’re not alone, as many purchase a ductless AC for room additions and for outbuildings like garages and toolsheds. Others install ductless units in multiple rooms in older homes where ductwork won’t fit.

How a Heat Pump Works

It’s important to understand how a ductless air conditioner works. As a first step, you should know that a ductless AC, also known as a mini-split system, is basically a heat pump. And how do heat pumps work? They cool homes by transferring heat energy by means of a chemical mixture called refrigerant. When the heat pump is in cooling mode, this element draws heat from the home and releases it outside through the compressor; heating mode reverses the procedure.

Energy Savings With Ductless Heat Pumps

With ductless heat pumps, you get the same two essential components: an outdoor compressor and an air handler. An air handler cools a single room, but the compressor can connect to multiple air handlers — typically up to eight.

At Cool Operator, we love letting customers in South Elgin, IL know that they can place the compressor as far as 50 feet away from the air handlers that it’s connected to. Besides that, the air handlers themselves have been designed with flexibility in mind; you won’t need to rethink your interior design on their account.

Greater Indoor Comfort

Because they don’t use ducts, mini-splits ensure that all the cool air they produce stays in your room. This translates to tremendous energy savings. Besides that, every mini-split comes with its own thermostat, so occupants can adjust each room’s temperature according to what personally makes them comfortable.

You can learn more about the benefits of mini-splits from one of our technicians at Cool Operator. Don’t forget that we also work on ducted heating and cooling systems, as well as humidifiers and IAQ systems. Call today to get started.
